Sometimes the planets seem to halt their steady motion across the sky and then loop backwards before carrying on again. This happens when Earth traveling along its own orbit 'overtakes' one of the other planets. The backwards motion of planets in the sky is called 'retrograde' motion. Here you can see the tracks of Mars, Venus and Mercury, all looping the loop as we follw them on the sky over a period of a few weeks.
